The German Wasp and Paper Wasp are common pest control problem in Auckland. Both belong to order Hymenoptera
the same order as Bees and Ants. The German wasp is the more agressive than the Paper wasp, and their nests are typically
hidden e.g. in walls. The paper wasp is coloured more black than yellow than the German wasp and their nests are mostly
visable e.g. attached to the sides of buildings. If you discover a wasps nest, it is strongly reccommended
that you DO NOT approach the nest, as wasps become agressive when their nest is threatened. In the case of larger
nests this can be up to 5 metres or more from the nest.
HELPFUL TIP If stung my a wasp or bee, rub a freshly cut onion on the sting as soon as possible. This will lessen the
effect of the sting. To have an effect this must be done immeaiatley.
TREATMENT: A Wasp nest should ideally be treated at dusk when all the wasps are in the nest. If the nest is
accessable the nest can be destroyed and removed. If the nest is not accessible Aces can still destroy the nest
but not remove it. It takes up to two hours to destroy and remove a wasps nest.
